Cleveland had gone through a long list of quarterbacks since the city returned to the NFL in 1999. The Browns needed a player who could produce on the field and generate some buzz off it.

Mayfield checked both boxes resoundingly. When Cleveland general manager John Dorsey called Mayfield on the first night of the 2018 draft to tell him he was the top pick, Mayfield didn’t boast. He cried.

“It just kind of brought out all of the emotions of the tough times that we went through, and the good ones,” Mayfield said. “To think about it all there in that moment, it was going to be a fresh start.”

One the Browns had been waiting decades for.

Mayfield joked after the Browns beat Atlanta in November 2018 that he woke up the morning of the game “feeling dangerous.”

He might have been kidding, but his words hinted at a bigger truth. Cleveland, after years of missteps, is ready to win again.

“This team will follow him anywhere,” Browns running back Nick Chubb said.

Good thing, because Mayfield is set on leading in his own unique way.
